AUGUSTA, Maine — After a difficult stretch of candidate drama, Maine Democrats believe they have finally discovered the future of political campaigning: a candidate who cannot speak, does not own a smartphone, and has never posted an embarrassing opinion online.

The fisherman, known simply as “Lobsterman,” has emerged as the party’s surprise favorite after strategists reportedly decided voters may be tired of candidates with complicated histories, strong opinions, and endless online scandals.

“This is the candidate we’ve been looking for,” said one Democratic strategist. “Why worry about experience? He has everything voters want: old-school toughness, a rugged beard, and the kind of mustache you can build a campaign around.” But, Lobsterman’s greatest political asset is also his most obvious limitation: he is mute.

“He has everything voters want: a rugged beard, and the kind of mustache you can build a campaign around”

While other candidates spend years explaining old comments, defending social media posts, and apologizing for things they said after a few drinks, Lobsterman has built a spotless public record by never creating one.

“He has no tweets, no podcasts, no hot takes, no weird interviews,” a campaign consultant said. “His entire archive is one picture of him holding fish. We believe it was taken by another fisherman, who was lost at sea in 1999. Frankly, we’ve never seen anything this clean.”

Supporters say his lack of political experience is exactly what Maine voters want. He has never voted on legislation, never debated an issue, and has no known positions on taxes, healthcare, foreign policy, or anything.

“He listens, or at least he stands there silently, which in politics is basically the same thing.”

“We’re excited about Lobsterman’s potential,” said Maine Democratic Party Chair Marjorie Thibodeau-Fogg. “We don’t actually know if he’s a Democrat, but we think his chances are good. We can tell voters what he believes later.”

Lobsterman represents a bold new political philosophy: say nothing, promise nothing, and let voters fill in the blanks. With voters complaining they aren’t being heard, party officials say it may be time to elect someone whose entire platform is listening?

As Democrats move on from the Platner era, party officials say Lobsterman represents a bold new direction: a candidate who cannot disappoint voters because he has never promised them anything.

His campaign slogan is simple: No comment.
